A Legacy Location
The Playground is built on a location with a legacy. For years, this spot was home to Fritzee-Freeze, a beloved ice cream shop and one of Dunedin’s most popular meeting places going back to the '80s. More than just a place to grab a cone, Fritzee-Freeze was a vibrant hub where friends, families, and neighbors gathered after games, caught up on weekends, and created memories that linger long after the last scoop.
As three longtime friends - Brent Gardner, Aaron Lucas, and Andy Polce - we grew up witnessing how powerful a simple public meeting place could be for the community. Before heading to a Falcons basketball game, the idea for The Playground sparked during a casual get-together. What if there was a new spot that captured the carefree fun of our youth, just like Fritzee-Freeze did, but offered experiences designed for our lives now? A destination with outdoor games, an elevated food experience, and a welcoming vibe for everyone. From that conversation, The Playground was born.
Today, The Playground carries forward the tradition of being Dunedin’s go-to spot for connection and fun, reimagined for a new generation. It’s a space designed not just for us, but for our friends, neighbors, and fellow locals to enjoy - continuing the spirit of community gathering started decades ago.

Aaron Lucas | The Culinary Creative
With two decades of experience in hospitality management at some of the area's top restaurants, Aaron is not only committed to exceptional guest service but is also the creative force behind The Playground’s menu. His passion for food shines through in every dish, from innovative takes on classics to crowd-pleasing favorites. Aaron’s expertise ensures guests enjoy a menu designed for sharing, savoring, and celebrating good times together.
Brent Gardner | The Community Connector
A lifelong Dunedin resident and local business owner for over 20 years, Brent brings a powerful sense of connection and purpose to The Playground.
